Papworth Hospital, one of Europe’s largest specialist heart and lung centres, has become the latest site to roll-out Patients Know Best’s patient-controlled medical records system in their hospital.
Patients Know Best was initially offered to 1,500 of Papworth Hospital’s patients and the deployment will be managed by the hospital’s Lung Defence Team – a specialist unit responsible for treating patients with highly complex, chronic lung conditions.
Papworth’s Lung Defence Team treats people from across the UK and beyond. By adopting this new approach with PKB, the hospital will move to a virtual clinic environment. This will enable clinicians to provide a higher level of care whilst ensuring essential staff can concentrate on giving direct care and support to patients.
Dr Chris Johnson, lead consultant at Papworth’s Lung Defence Team said:
“It’s encouraging to see that 200 patients signed up within the first week. Our patients want to self-manage their health problems in the knowledge that they have easy access to expert opinion and more intensive treatments when they need them. PKB provides us with the tools we need to keep delivering a responsive service.”
A patient trialling Patients Know Best, added:
“It’s a terrific system. Learning how to use the different functions takes a bit of getting used to but it will be really useful to monitor symptoms and operate from the PKB dashboard. I really like the concept.”
Specialist physiotherapists working within Papworth’s Lung Defence Team will also be able to access and work with a patient’s own records – something not possible before.
Dr Mohammad Al-Ubaydli, founder and CEO of Patients Know Best said:
“Online consultations reduce the harm from travel to see a specialist and prevent the infections from hospital waiting rooms. They also reduce the workload of vital specialist services. Papworth’s specialists are some of the best in the world so it’s a pleasure for us to work with them.”
