The Patients Know Best (PKB) platform is free of charge for any institution teaching healthcare students. This work is part of our social mission, and we refer to it as “PKB Education Programme”: we want to help educators train the future healthcare professionals on the digital tools for health.
We’re pleased to share our latest annual report here today.
The Education Programme started in 2014 with the Medical School of the University of Leicester, and has grown to a total of 12 universities to date. We’re now not only working with schools of medicine, but also nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, and physiotherapy. The students have the opportunity to log in to an exact copy of the PKB platform and behave as professionals, while the patients are either patient volunteers, actors, or simulated case study patients, depending on the learning team’s approach.
The “2022-23 Academic Year Annual Report” looks back at the main highlights over the past academic year (September 2022 to July 2023), which saw more than a thousand students use PKB. This includes four new UK and international universities who we have welcomed onto our programme over the past 12 months. Some are already live and actively engaging students, others are planning their first use of the platform for the start of the new academic year.
We are delighted to see more institutions making use of our platform to support their curricula. Alongside the common use for the teaching of consultation skills and for Problem Based Learning (PBL) sessions, many universities are also using PKB for simulated/virtual placements. Supporting this newer usage opportunity we published a case study on how our Education Programme helps overcome the challenges of face-to-face placement procurement for healthcare students.
